Greater Sage-grouse & Pahranagat NWR

April 7, 2018 – April 8, 2018 all-day
Ely, Nevada
Doug Chang

The primary goal of this trip is to see greater sage grouse on a lek (strutting ground).

On Saturday leave Las Vegas very early andl do general birding at Pahranagat National Wildlife Refuge and Key Pittman Wildlife Management Area, and then continue to Ely, Nevada for the night and a group dinner. For folks not interested in leaving Las Vegas and bird along the way to Ely – should plan on meeting the group for dinner Saturday night.

On Sunday we will rise very early to meet Aaron Ambos of Southern Nevada Water Authority. He will lead us to a monitored lek that is expected to have a number of strutting males. Afterwards, we will do some birding in Spring Valley, expecting to see golden eagles, rough-legged hawks, and ferruginous hawks, and then return to Las Vegas.  Dress for cold.

Only three (3) vehicles – including the leader vehicles, will be allowed into the lek area. A limit of 6 tickets will be sold for this field trip. A waiting list will be maintained for this event. If the event is sold out and you want to be put on the wait list, please contact Doug Chang (

Meet up location and trip details will be sent to participants one week prior to departure.
